CRIME IN MICHIGAN To paint an accurate and complete portrait of crime in Michigan requires gathering snapshots in time of the many different kinds of crime that occur. There is the horror of violence, which requires documenting the most visible crimes, such as homicide. Yet we must not neglect the hidden crime of domestic violence. We have included a special article on community policing and domestic violence. This picture should also reflect how overall crime patterns change over time. Moreover, as we become more sophisticated in our understanding of the dynamics and interconnectedness of violence, we track "new" crimes, such as hate crimes, which are, of course, not new but which have too long been ignored. To gain understanding of the challenges that the broad spectrum of crime poses for the state of Michigan, visit all the options in this section. Then also take a moment to click on Victim Voices, to learn more about the people behind the numbers. |
