BASIC TIPS:
Bugs and security holes

Your browser is the software that you use to tour the World Wide Web, such as Netscape Navigator or Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, and software companies in that business are constantly working to update their products. This intense competition often means that they introduce products that still have bugs or security holes.

In fact, they rely on their users to help them de-bug their products, by offering them the opportunity to be "beta" testers (beta refers to software that is still under development).

What this means to you is that you may not want to download any "beta" versions of software, particularly browser software. Not only are you risking security holes, but problems could include cases where your entire system locks up.

And you should probably avoid being among the first to download the new final version of a browser even when it is put into wide release -- give the company a couple months to fix those initial problems.

And perhaps the most important things you can do is to keep these problems in perspective. Yes, you may read a screaming headline about a new security bug that was found in a browser, but that doesn't necessarily translate into a problem for you. Chances are good that the problem was fixed before anyone had a chance to exploit the bug in ways that threatened you.
